There has been some concern about the absence of height from West Virginia's transforming men's basketball roster, but the most recent portal addition helps allay that concern.
Eduardo Andre (6-11, 250), who played two years at Nebraska and two more at Fresno State, has committed to WVU. Jon Rothstein was first to report on the move.
A native of Angola, Andre appeared in 50 games from 2020-22 for the Cornhuskers, averaging 2.9 points and 2.8 rebounds as a backup. He tallied nine minutes per contest as a freshman and 11.5 as a sophomore.Â
Moving on to Fresno State for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, his playing time increased significantly, as he started 33 of the 49 games he appeared in, bumping his playing time up to 22 minutes per outing. He averaged 8.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in his first season with the Bulldogs, and backed that up with 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds last season, and totaled 65 blocks in his two seasons.
He played in just 20 games for the Bulldogs this past year after suffering a knee injury that plagued him throughout the season and finally sidelined him in early February.
Andre is a different fit for DeVries' offense, as he is almost exclusively a player who scores close to the hoop. He has shot the ball efficiently from the floor throughout his career, making 59% of his field goal tries, but has been successful on only 58% of his attempts from the line, although he was very good as a junior, hitting 49-63 (77.8%).
He displays solid movement skills and can attack the rim from the short area, and in filling out to his current weight of 250 pounds should have the ability to defend some space in the lane.
Andre competed at AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona, during his last year prior to signing with Nebraska, and before that for two years at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. Born in Luanda, Angola, he and his family moved to London when he was four years old. He did not begin playing competitive basketball until he was 14, but still earned offers from the Huskers along with Maryland, Texas A&M and Illinois out of high school.
Andre is the fifth transfer to commit to WVU for head coach Darian DeVries, partially offsetting the eight former players who hit the exit button during the portal windows during the offseason. The current window closes on Wednesday, May 2, but players have as long as they wish to commit to and sign with new teams.
WVU's anticipated roster now includes eight players, including walk-on Aden Tagaloa-Nelson, who is also a defensive back on the football team. Ofri Naveh is the only other returnee from last year's team, and joins high school signee KJ Tenner on WVU's list. Six open scholarships remain.
